Exploring Goblin Valley State Park: A Journey Through Utah’s Otherworldly Landscape

Introduction: An Alien Encounter in Utah

Goblin Valley State Park—what a name, right? If you’re a fan of bizarre rock formations, the Mars-like terrain, or just love a good sci-fi reference, this place is an absolute must-visit. As I arrived at Goblin Valley, I couldn’t help but feel like I had just landed on an alien planet—perhaps the set of *Galaxy Quest*, surrounded by the goblins that could easily be stand-ins for the strange creatures from the movie.

Unlike some of my solo adventures, this hike was a family affair, shared with my wife, my sister-in-law, and her husband, Chris. We couldn’t help but crack jokes and take photos posing as stranded space travelers in this alien-like landscape.

The Land of Goblins: Not Your Average Hike

Goblin Valley is, to put it mildly, bizarre. Imagine hundreds of mushroom-shaped rocks scattered across a desert, and you’ll get a rough idea of the landscape. These formations—called hoodoos—look like something straight out of a B-movie set, and I half-expected to hear *“Never give up, never surrender!”* echo across the valley. Hiking here isn’t about steep inclines or technical terrain; it’s about wandering through a surreal, otherworldly landscape that feels like another planet.

Wandering Among the Goblins

There’s no real set trail when you’re wandering through Goblin Valley. You just meander through the maze of formations, each one stranger than the last. Some of them seem to have faces—almost like they’re about to jump out at you likeThe Gorignak (Rock in the language of the Blue Demons) is a Biolithic species native to Epsilon Gorniar II from *Galaxy Quest*. Others lean precariously, balancing in ways that make you question the laws of physics. I spent hours wandering through the valley, constantly amused by the thought of Alan Rickman’s character, Dr. Lazarus, delivering sarcastic commentary at every turn.

Getting Prepared for the Alien Landscape

Unlike more strenuous hikes, Goblin Valley is a pretty laid-back experience. There’s no need for hiking poles or waders here—just a good pair of shoes and maybe a sunhat, because this alien planet gets HOT. I went in late fall, so the temperatures were fairly mild, but I can only imagine how otherworldly it must feel in the blazing summer sun. Even then, be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. You’ll need it while you’re exploring this strange and dusty playground.  Plan on bringing your own snacks since this park is very remote.

Unleashing Your Inner Kid (or Sci-Fi Fan)

There’s something about the landscape that just invites you to let go and explore with the curiosity of a kid. I found myself clambering up some of the smaller rock formations, taking photos that could easily be mistaken for stills from a sci-fi flick. At one point, I stood atop one of the taller hoodoos, doing my best *Captain Taggart* pose, imagining myself at the helm of a starship. Goblin Valley does that to you—it pulls you into its whimsical, alien charm and makes you forget you’re still on planet Earth.

Exploring Beyond the Valley: The Three Sisters

While the main valley is the star of the show, I took a short detour to check out one of Goblin Valley’s famous landmarks: The Three Sisters. These towering hoodoos stand in stark contrast to the shorter, stockier goblins that fill the valley. The Three Sisters reminded me of those ominous pillars you see in alien movies—majestic, looming, and strangely beautiful.

Finding Solitude Among the Goblins

One of the best parts of Goblin Valley is the solitude. Even though it can be a popular spot, the valley is so vast that it’s easy to find a quiet corner to yourself. While there, maybe only a half dozen other visitors accompanied us. There are plenty of places to find peace in little nooks in the middle of the valley to perch on a rock and soak in the strange beauty of it all. The quietness here is almost eerie—it felt like I had truly stepped into a different world, free from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Goblin Valley isn’t the type of hike that leaves you breathless from physical exertion, but it’ll definitely take your breath away with its surreal beauty. It’s the perfect place to let your imagination run wild, whether you’re channeling your inner explorer or pretending you’re on a mission to save the galaxy. If you’re ever in Utah, don’t skip this park—it may just be the most fun you’ll ever have on an alien planet (without leaving Earth). And remember, *“Never give up, never surrender!”*
